World Cup Analysis

Cricket world cup is back and we had seen the grand welcome it has received across the globe. This cricket world cup 2011 holds some great significance not only because world cup has the reputation of being the most important tournament in the history of cricket but also because this is going to be a litmus test for ODI with increasing popularity of T20 cricket. Unless the format passes the test and proves that it can remain the most sought after format, it may quite well be the last ODI world cup which is drawing a huge excitement among the cricket lovers.

Since its start in 1975, it kept becoming more popular every time it was played. Question arises that did it reach its peak? Emergence of T20 suddenly shifted the attention away from ODIs a bit. Test matches though remained the format for classic cricket lovers, T20 became the better medium of entertainment which meant fan base of ODI couldn’t remain the same and some of us started favoring T20 over ODIs. Anyways leaving the question on people to answer after it probably finishes but till then it is here to enthrall everyone across the globe.

This time we are having 14 teams participating for the glory however a few teams completely look out of favor. Next time onwards we are supposed to have only 10 teams for ODI world cup which will make it more interesting. Nevertheless even this time teams like Australia (Defending champions and a total of 4-time champions), Sri Lanka (1996 champion and the joint hosts), South Africa (Having the reputation of being the favorite whenever and wherever they play), India (1983 champions and the joint hosts), Pakistan (1992 champs and a real dark horse kind of) and England (have performed well recently) will make it very engaging, entertaining, exciting and enthralling. We certainly can’t completely rule out teams like New Zealand and West Indies. Not to forget West Indies are 2 time champs and NZ already had featured in 4 semifinals, still recent form of these teams don’t suggest these to be the teams to lift the trophy.

Teams for top 4:

Australia: They are 4 times champs more than any other team and are the defending champs as well. They are well known for their true professionalism on field. Even this time around they look like one of the most balanced sides with batters like Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and fast bowlers Bret Lee, Mitchel Johnson and Shaun Tait. Shane Watson as an all-rounder can be one of the biggest impact players of this world cup. Spin bowling is one of their weaknesses though

Sri Lanka: They are 1996 champs and are the only team to have won the world cup when they were the hosts (Finals though were in Lahore). On sub-continent pitches they always have the edge more than any other team and they are known to be the hardest team to be beat on their home soil. Road to semifinals should be a cake walk for them (I am assuming that they will finish as the top 2 of group A and will not be up against India or SA in Quarterfinals)

South Africa: They are known as Chokers but not to forget they are always the favorites and the team to beat since 1992 when they came back. They always have the balanced side. Players like AB DeVilliers (Also a wicket keeper in this world cup is a win-win situation for SA), Jaques Kallis (Batting all-rounder and a key member with bat or bowl whenever and wherever needed and is regarded as one of the best all-rounders world cricket has ever had), Greame Smith, Hashim Amla, Dale Steyn (One of the best fast bowlers of recent time) and Johan Botha add variety and depth to their line-up

India: 1983 champs when nobody was expecting them to lift the crown, Team India started to be the favorite thereafter however still looking for the 2^nd world cup title. Came closer to doing so in 2003 but then beaten convincingly by Aussies in the finals. Even in 2007 were the favorites, but made a shock exit in league stage itself after losing to Bangladesh. This time around when world cup is against jointly hosted by India, without any surprise India is one of the strong contenders to lift the trophy. Sachin Tendulkar is for the record 6^th time (equaling the record with Javed Miandad) participating in the world cup and will be trying hard to add the only left milestone in his 20+ years cricketing career. Players like Virender Sehwag, Captain cool Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh and Yusuf Pathan also have the caliber of changing the result of the any match single handedly. Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh spearhead Indian bowling attack. Indian line up has the depth however the only weakness seem to be their inconsistent bowling attack. With a couple of odds their road to Semifinal doesn’t look that difficult, though cricket is a game of uncertainties as we all know.

England: They have never lifted the ODI world cup trophy but their recent form makes them a contender without any doubt. They have a good bowling attack in form of Anderson, Broad and Swann. Batsmen like Strauss and KP can change the course of match from any situation. Still to reach the semifinals they will have to cause an upset to be very honest

Pakistan: Under the able leadership of Imran Khan they have lifted the trophy in 1992. Since then they are trying hard to add to that. Known for a handful of controversies, Pak team has been in news for all wrong reasons recently. They still have the talent to make it to the semis. All-rounders like Afridi and Razzaq and batters like Younis, Misbah are dangerous for any other team. They are balanced but inconsistent on the other hand. On their day they are capable of beating any side.

Dark Horse:

Bangladesh: They can be lions in their den. Last time in Caribbean, they shocked the world by defeating Team India and finally pushing them out of the tournament from the league stage itself. Don’t forget Team India were the favorites even the last time around. Even at Super 8, they brought another upset against mighty South Africans. This time they are the joint hosts and will be hosting all their league matches. Will certainly have an edge for home conditions and once again they can shock anybody. By the time this article is being written India were lucky to survive their threat

So, yet again get ready for a couple of months of entertainment. We wish Team India all the very best for their campaign

शाम एक तन्हाई है,

अन्तिम साँस

सपने बिखरे पड़े थे,
बेसुध पड़ा था वो,
बिल्कुल चेतनहीन और संवेदनहीन,
यादें थप थपा रही थी,
उसे नींद से जगाने की चेष्टा कर रही थी,
जबकि नींद कैसे आ सकती थी उसे,
नींद तो उड़ चुकी थी आँखों से।
स्मृतिपटल पर उभर रही थी,
खट्टी मीठी यादें!
कभी अश्रु की कुछ बूँदें ला रही थी पलकों पर,
तो कभी चेहरे पर मद्धम सी खुशी दिख जाती थी,
और कभी कभी कुछ विचित्र सी भाव भंगिमा,
कुछ अजीब सी स्मृति,
मानों झकझोर देती थी उसे,
सहम उठता था वो बरबस।

आँखें बंद होने लगी थी,
पहले थोडी सी खुली थी,
पूरा खोल पाने की उर्जा बची नहीं थी उसमें।
आँखें बंद होने का क्या कारण हो सकता था?
हो सकता है कुछ सोच रहा होगा,
या वो अतीत में खो चुका होगा,
पलक झपक गयी होगी।
यूँ तो उसका शरीर,
पहले से ही शिथिल पड़ा हुआ है,
ऊपर से ये बंद आँखें,
कुछ और ही कहने लगती थी,
संदेह का आवरण रच जाती थी
लेकिन नहीं मौत के आगोश में नहीं था,
साँसे चल रही थी उसकी,
हाँ! थोडी धीमी जरूर हो गयी थी धड़कन।

कहीं मौत के विकराल परिदृश्य ने,
उसे तोड़ तो नहीं दिया था,
कहीं इसी भय से तो नहीं झुक गयी थी उसकी पलकें,
मृत्यु निस्संदेह एक भयावह सच है!
इसमें तनिक भी संदेह नहीं कि,
मृत्यु को बहुत नजदीक पा रहा होगा वो,
चिंता की लकीरें इसी भय की उपज होंगी!
हाँ वो बेवस दिखा था,
वो निस्सहाय दिखा था,
सिसक दिखी थी चेहरे पर,
लेकिन तड़प नहीं दिखी थी,
शायद न मौत से लड़ने का साहस बचा था,
न जीने की अदम्य इच्छा बची थी उसमें।
आत्मसमर्पण की मुद्रा में था वो,
हार चुका था वो जीवन से,
उसका संघर्ष दम तोड़ चुका था।

शायद इसीलिए याद कर रहा था,
अपने अच्छे बुरे पलों को,
अतीत के गलियारे में टटोल रहा था,
अपनी ही समीक्षा करने में लगा हुआ था,
और क्यूँ नहीं करता!
यहीं से जुटा रहा था वो,
अपने लिए एक अप्रतिम साहस,
जो उसे इस कष्ट में भी,
नियंत्रित रखे हुए था।
सच तो ये था की,
एक अजीब सी तृप्ति दिख रही थी,
उसके मुख मंडल पर,
जीवन को जीतने का अभिमान तो नहीं था,
परन्तु अपनी साँसों के साथ,
न्याय करने का संतोष अवश्य था।

उसकी धड़कने और धीमी होने लगी थी,
कभी तेज़ भी हो जाती थी अचानक।
जीवन-मृत्यु के साथ,
मानों उसका द्वन्द अपने चरम पर था,
साँसें लम्बी हो चली थी,
अकेलापन गहरा हो चला था,
उदासी गहरी हुई,
लेकिन वो क्षणिक ही थी,
मुस्कान की एक किरण निकली,
और चेहरे पर बिखर गयी,
उसने एक और लम्बी साँस ली,
ये उसकी अन्तिम साँस थी।

स्तब्ध!

स्तब्ध!

क्रोध से थी लाल उसकी दोनों आंखें
बह रही थी चार बूँदें फिर लहू की
कर रही थी रक्त रंजित उसका अम्बर
देख कर दीवार पे यूँ सर पटकते

रह गया था मैं यूहीं स्तब्ध

निःशब्द!

आह सी थी निकल जाती
देख के वीभत्स दृश्य
देख के फिर उसका निश्चय
खो रही थी
आह भी अस्तित्व अपना

जोश उसका देख के मैं रह गया निःशब्द

अवाक!

जल रही थी उसकी ऑंखें
बह रहे थे अश्रु पश्चाताप के
मग्न था वो अपनी निष्ठा से
सत्य सा था उसकी आंखों मे छुपा

कर दिया इस कटु सत्य ने मुझको अवाक

मुग्ध!

था कभी स्तब्ध मैं
और था कभी निःशब्द
उसको देखा कष्ट सहते
फिर भी सच्चाई पे अड़ते
झूठ से बेवाक लड़ते

आज उसके व्यक्तित्व पे
मैं हो गया हूँ मुग्ध

फिर भी कैसे मैं छुपाऊँ
हूँ कभी निःशब्द भी
और हूँ तनिक स्तब्ध!

मैं चाहता हूँ!

मैं चाहता हूँ!

मैं डूब जाऊं ऐसे सागर में,
जिसका कोई किनारा ना हो!
मैं बरबाद हो जाऊं कुछ इस तरह,
जैसे मेरा कोई सहारा ना हो!
मैं रातों को अकेले इस तरह भटकूँ
जैसे मुझ जैसा कोई आवारा ना हो!
मेरी हालत भी कुछ यूं हो जाए,
कि मेरे जैसा कोई बेचारा ना हो!

अपने चारों तरफ़ अश्कों का समंदर बना दूँ,
वो समंदर जिसके मंथन से,
हँसी के दो वक्त भी मिल ना सकें!

मेरा पूरा शरीर उस गर्त में हो,
जहाँ से मैं उठ के ऊपर आ ना सकूं!

दुनिया से इस कदर बेपरवाह,
कि ये नींद मेरी आखिरी नींद बन जाए,
जिस नींद से मैं जाग ना सकूं!
मेरा शरीर विलीन हो जाए,
पंचतत्वों मी इस तरह,
कि धुआं और राख क्या,
विचार भी बाहर आ न सके!
